UNIV 288B: Global Communities Colloquium III: Service-Learning

This course is one of two course options for students in the third semester of Global Communities. The other option is Global Communities Colloquium III: Researching Society and Culture.

This course is based on an approach to teaching called Service-Learning. One definition of Service-Learning describes it as "a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities designed to promote student learning and development" (Jacoby 1996, p. 5). In this course, we will undertake service in a number of local schools/organizations and use that experience to explore and reflect on issues of intercultural communication and social issues such as multiculturalism, power and privilege, and civic engagement.
