In
keeping with UM's tradition of sharing knowledge from
around the world and with our mission that students
on campus should receive the best possible education
on international issues, Dorchester Hall has a guest
apartment available to UM visiting scholars (It is not
available for students or non UM affiliated scholars).
The apartment is fully furnished, with stove, refrigerator,
telephone, and a full bathroom.
|
Visiting
scholars or their departments may reserve the apartment
for a period no less than 3 weeks and no more than one
semester. The apartment is usually not available during
the summer. Demand is high, so early application is
encouraged. It is our goal to provide short-term housing
in exchange for the visiting scholar spending time with
students. This is a wonderful opportunity for scholars
to interact with students, and it is our expectation
that while scholars stay with us they will take a lead
on building relationships with students.
During spring semesters the apartment is occupied by
a Writer in Residence selected by the Jiménez-Porter
Writers’ House.

Again,
we expect scholars to spend time with Dorchester residents.
There are many ways to do this, and all of them are
fun!
Scholars
can give a brief presentation about their particular
expertise; introduce and discuss and international
movie; hold a tutorial session to help students with
homework; or just "hang out" in the evenings.
Another way to interact with students is at the "INTERNATIONAL
COFFEE HOUR" which takes place every Wednesday
from 3:00pm to 4:30pm in the basement lounge.
Before the arrival of the visiting scholar, a participation
arrangement between the scholar and the program coordinator
will be determined. A visiting scholar who does not
seek to engage students may be asked to leave earlier
than agreed.
